Seabed mineral mining
What a thicket of controversy. Demand for minerals is increasing, and current terrestrial mining is (probably) way more destructive than deep sea extraction of seafloor concentrated mineral nodules. Scientists know little about the diversity of life and ecology of the seabed, so the long-term effects of mining are unknown. Deep sea mining may decrease or increase terrestrial mining. Too many unknowns.
