This Houston lecture about lawsuits was very informative about the process and how to cope.

Regarding depositions:
Plaintiff's attorney's questioning style at the deposition:
1) "Pal" - joking and banter, casual dress - recognize this and ignore
2) Freight train: rapid-fire, to get you to answer without thinking
3) Butterfly - confusing changes from one line of questions to another, attempting to elicit conflcting statements (ignore and answer consistently)
4) Time-bomb - leaves contentious questions to the end when you're tired (ask for a break)
5) Ignoramus - attempts to get you to volunteer information, leaves time and gestures you to continue
