Thermo-regulation drove human evolution

This author argues that thermo-regulation was a major evolutionary force, making us taller and thinner to withstand heat. Walking long distances carrying fruit was another evolutionary pressure, and both of these factors made our pelvis smaller, forcing childbirth earlier in gestation and hence newborns that were more vulnerable.
I always thought it was just increased brain power that increased head size in human evolution, but he argues that the pelvis was getting smaller also.

Video Stabilization: How to Stabilize Shaky Video Footage

Very interesting how you can select the portion of the frame you want it to analyze for stabilization, and it tracks those objects and their movement for the entire clip and you can adjust how "smooth" to make it or whether to keep some camera panning in the clip, for instance.

The Windhover by Gerard Manley Hopkins | Books | The Guardian

nice analysis of a very beautiful poem that illustrates "sprung rhythm"
The Windhover
To Christ Our Lord

I caught this morning morning's minion, king-
dom of daylight's dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate's heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird, – the achieve of, the mastery of the thing.

Brute beauty and valour and act, oh, air, pride, plume, here
Buckle! AND the fire that breaks from thee then, a billion
Times told lovelier, more dangerous, O my chevalier!

No wonder of it: shéer plód makes plough down sillion
Shine, and blue-bleak embers, ah my dear,
Fall, gall themselves, and gash gold-vermilion.

Idioms walking tour of London

I enjoyed this little walking travelogue around London interspersed with the curious origins of some common phrases.

Solar powered tiny washing machine

We have used a similar washer at our cottage. It takes a lot more steps than a regular machine - switching between rinsing and emptying and washing, and the spinner takes only a few items at a time - but it's conveniently tiny. A solar setup would be very convenient for camping, rather than lugging clothes and waiting in a lineup for the laundromat.

Thiamine and Vitamin C for severe sepsis - snake oil or surprisingly simple salvation

Have you heard of this?
"thiamine 200 mg IV q12hr, Vitamin C 1.5 grams Q6hr, and hydrocortisone 50 mg IV q6hr"

Such a simple treatment that is achieving decreased mortality in severe sepsis. Seems worth a try. Or should we wait for the trials to come in, in a year or so.

Vitamin C possible mechanisms:

inhibition of oxidative stress,
modulation of intracellular signaling pathways
maintenance of homeostatic levels of nitric oxide
scavenges reactive oxygen species
inhibits the NADPH oxidase that synthesizes superoxide
resulting changes in redox-sensitive signaling pathways may diminish endothelial expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tissue factor and adhesion molecules.
regulates nitric oxide concentration by releasing nitric oxide from adducts
acting through tetrahydrobiopterin to stimulate endothelial nitric oxide synthase

Great movie

A movie so utterly and frankly ordinary that it is compelling. An essay about why ordinariness can be fulfilling. A provoking look at the gap between our expectations of ourselves and the reality that overtakes us, and how to come to terms with how wonderful it actually is.
For a movie to play the slow grind of everyday life and make it compelling is exceedingly difficult, and takes great acting, close shots and details, and a script that pulls you in.

The Happiest Guy in the World

There's something poignantly vapid about this man's lifestyle, cruising for 20 years straight...aboard cruise ships. My impression went from enviable ->evanescent->empty.
However, if you look at it in terms of this justification, maybe not so bad. Plus, he works four hours a day on his investment business.
"...20 years in a retirement home for someone entering at age 65 would cost an average of $228,075, as opposed to $230,497 for the same amount of time aboard a cruise ship." https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/24/business/retiring-on-a-cruise-ship.html

The Lava Lamps That Help Keep The Internet Secure

Wow. 10% of the web's entire traffic flow through this company's servers for data encryption. They use a live photo of these Lava lamps to help generate random numbers. Also, I really like this guy's journalistic style.

Photoshop removing distracting objects

I was fascinated to watch the facility he has with editing using photoshop, and how sophisticated the software is at taking an area of the photo and duplicating it elsewhere.

Gated reverb: a recording-studio mishap that shaped '80s music

That's that characteristic 80's drum sound, as in Phil Collins' "I can hear it coming in the air tonight" drum solo. What a great sound.
It's not so simple to make it though. Here's a tutorial.: https://music.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-create-an-80s-gated-reverb--audio-14985
