NVIDIA: AI Reconstructs Photos

-incredible. Fills in empty space in photo based on, I guess, what it expects to "see" there... Since it places eyes, not skin, when eyes are erased.

Reactions to reactions to singing, featuring Grace VanderWaal

-very touching to see fans getting complimented on their cover by the original artist.

Genesis of a song - 'Shape of You' | NYT - Diary of a Song

-very interesting to hear how the layers of the hit came together.

-interesting to hear how prolonged the search was, for a singer who matched the voice of the camera-shy songwriter.

Things to check before travel to foreign country - U.S. State Department

To get a better understanding of how these regulations vary, travelers can utilize the State Department's country pages, which list out local laws and health information for your travel destination.

Starkweather's second main tip is not to attend demonstrations or protests.

Should you be traveling to a location where protests and demonstrations are taking place, Starkweather advises sharing your travel itinerary with friends and family, making sure to include your address, travel dates, and contact information.

Sarah's favorite poem: "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen

Dulce et Decorum Est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Notes: Latin phrase is from the Roman poet Horace: “It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country.”

A million-dollar bet and a quick lesson in long-term investing.

Buffett reports that, over the ten years, the S&P 500 had an average annual gain of 8.5%. How did the elite crew do? Not one of the five fund-of-funds kept up with the market. Taken together, their average annual return was less than 3%. It's as if Buffett's street car had not just won the race, but beaten the NASCAR team by five laps.

Are solar panels worth it?

He goes through the numbers in detail, and shows that at the price he paid, and with the "tiers" of rates he pays for electricity, he will recoup his initial investment (after 30% government rebate) in 8 years, but at the current price of solar panels that has now dropped to 3 years. And he says that trend on time to recoup investment is continuing to get shorter, both as the cost of solar panels goes down and the cost of electricity continues to steadily climb by (a mandated maximum of) 8% a year. (Also, the efficiency of solar panels continues to increase.)

Fly By Wire control system in an electric hydrofoil boat

As he concludes, "No noise, no waves, no emissions."

Ingenious: Ultrasonic sensors detect the height above the surface on both sides of the boat and automatically control flaps on the folks to keep it perfectly level. But...why did they make it look so much like a car?

world speed record sailing a nautical mile

This looks like a very rough ride. But they obviously really enjoyed doing it. I imagine this craft doesn't weigh much.
